Creating tailored therapeutic and inclusive outdoor spaces

Urban Green provided landscape design services for this care home development, with a focus on creating therapeutic and inclusive outdoor spaces tailored to the needs of vulnerable residents.

The central feature of the scheme was a communal courtyard garden designed to offer both sensory stimulation and quiet retreat, supporting well-being and day-to-day engagement with nature.

The garden included a circular walking route for gentle exercise and accessibility, ornamental and sensory planting to provide year-round interest, and raised beds arranged in an ‘allotment’-style layout to allow residents the opportunity to participate in gardening. These elements were complemented by a variety of quiet seating areas that encourage rest, reflection, and social connection.

Planting design throughout the site was carefully considered to define pathways and gathering spaces with soft, structured beds, while more informal planting is used toward the site’s eastern edge to blend with the surrounding context.
