We are a design and environmental practice who specialise in landscape architecture, urban design, landscape planning, arboriculture, ecology and natural capital.

Our teams work together to overcome challenges and provide clients with solutions and expert advice. We are driven by a shared desire to make a positive impact on people, places and the environment.

Based in Manchester, we work with clients and on projects across the UK.

Martin King Managing Director

Martin is a natural leader and designer with over 25 years' experience of leading a wide range of projects within the built environment.

He seeks to get under the skin of a project and use his commercial acumen to add value.

A keen eye for detail, art and brutalist architecture, Martin's real passion is his beloved VW Campervan.

Matt Taylor Associate Director

Matt leads the studio's multidisciplinary projects, drawing on over 15 years' experience as a Chartered Landscape Architect. He also takes an active role in building strong relationships with our clients and consultants.

One of Matt's claims to fame was that he had schoolboy trials for Liverpool Football Club. Obviously he thought Landscape Architecture had better career prospects.

Karen O’Shea Associate

Karen leads our expert Arboriculture team, ensuring clients receive the highest quality of service. Her years of experience as both an arboricultural consultant and local authority tree officer means she has a clear understanding of what is required on both sides of the table.

Karen was a 100m and 200m sprint champion in school but these days she prefers a more leisurely walk around a National Trust garden, followed by cream tea of course.

Mark Evans Principal Landscape Architect

As a Chartered Landscape Architect with over 15 years' experience, Mark leads project delivery and specialises in Landscape Planning.

Marks's experience is vast and includes major education schemes and his planning and assessment work includes towers in Manchester city centre and a new university campus in Worcester. He is currently delivering a major housing scheme in Delamere and a TVIA for a new boathouse in Chiswick, London.

Sporty as a teenager, Mark played county football as a striker for Leicestershire and had ambitions to be a stuntman (The Fall Guy in particular) or a weatherman.

Ste Allan Senior Landscape Architect

A very experienced and proactive Chartered Landscape Architect with a keen eye and passion for innovative design.

Ste has over 10 years' experience, during which time he has successfully delivered a diverse range of projects for a huge variety of clients, briefs and budgets. These include high quality public realm spaces, school projects, residential developments, heritage schemes, playgrounds, major infrastructure works, and award winning flower show gardens.

Not afraid of a challenge when it comes to fun fundraising – Ste has bungee jumped, skydived, abseiled, ran multiple Manchester 10k events, and made a fair few cakes over the years!

Amy Turner Senior Landscape Architect

Amy has over 10 years' professional experience in the landscape profession with significant public and private sector experience, including major education programmes and significant infrastructure projects.

Ever reliable, consistent and focused, Amy is very much the engine room of the team.

She loves a real ale, travelling off the beaten track and some pretty heavy music!

Maciej is a Chartered Landscape Architect having initially joining us 5 years ago on an Erasmus programme.

A senior member of the landscape team, Maciej is self-motivated, confident and passionate with a creative flair and attention to detail that produces high quality design solutions for our clients.

Andrew Lewthwaite Landscape Architect

Originally completing his year out placement at Urban Green, Andrew has now returned after graduating following his Masters degree. He is now looking to progress his career further by completing his Pathway to Chartership.

Outside of work Andrew enjoys visiting art galleries, making regular visits to Yorkshire Sculpture Park as well as fossil hunting on the Jurassic coast.

Chantelle Schulz Senior Landscape Planner

As a Chartered Landscape Architect with over 13 years experience, Chantelle leads project delivery and specialises in Landscape Planning.

Chantelle’s experience is varied and her planning and assessment work includes TVIA within city centres, LVIA for projects ranging from woodland treehouses to major residential schemes, open space assessments to green belt assessments. She also has experience supporting planning appeals as an Expert Witness.

Originally trained as a Zoologist, Chantelle still harbours a dream of living in a jungle with the animals (though accepts she may have to make do with the dog for now).

Kevin Swindells Environmental Planner

Kev leads on key environmental planning projects for Urban Green. He is qualified in Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and produces Landscape and Visual Appraisals (LVAs); Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments (LVIAs); Townscape and Visual Impact Assessments (TVIAs); and Green Belt Assessments, coordinating with internal disciplines, local authorities, developers, planners and architects.

Notable projects include the Manchester Civic Quarter Heat Network Energy Centre, generating low-carbon heat and power in the city centre; Skerton Road, a 367-bed apartment scheme on the former Arkady Craigmillar factory site in Trafford Bar and a 17-storey mixed-use development located on Waterloo Road, adjacent to the Liverpool Waters and the historic Princes Dock.

By night, Kev provides the soundtrack to some of Manchester’s most popular bars and restaurants.

Ruby joins Urban Green on her year out placement from the University of Sheffield.

Tom Royles Urban Designer

Tom graduated from the University of Manchester with a Masters in Town and Country Planning (Urban Design specialism) and has since worked on a variety of projects including development management, urban design and neighbourhood planning. This has seen him focus on delivering residential development, creating design guidance documents for community groups, appraising housing layouts and masterplans, and representing clients at planning appeal.

Having competed at both a national and international stage as a competitive Judoka, Tom's career highlight saw him represent Wales at the Commonwealth Tournament in 2012 where he received a silver medal.

Gemma Hizzett Urban Designer

Gemma is currently completing a MA Urban Design part-time at Leeds Beckett University, having originally graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2011. She previously worked at Pegasus Group in Leeds and over the past three years has developed her skills and experience as a fully qualified Urban Designer. Gemma has experience of working with some of the largest housebuilders including Persimmon Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Banks Group, delivering masterplans, site feasibilities, design and access statements and architectural designs. She is experienced in Adobe Design packages and 3D software such as Revit, Auto CAD and Vectorworks.

Andy Bagshaw Senior Arboricultural Consultant

Andy began his arboricultural career as a groundsman/tree surgeon and completed his Foundation Degree in Arboriculture at Myerscough College.

Andy's love of everything arboriculture and the outdoors has seen him work for a reputable consultancy based in West Yorkshire for ten years and more recently at another in South Manchester.

Andy has been involved in several high profile surveys for both the public and private sector and has seen his work published by the Trees and Design Action Group.

His hobbies include running, which has seen him run the New York Marathon, travelling and being in the outdoors.

Robert Hickey Arboricultural Consultant

Rob joins Urban Green having spent 4 years in both consultancy and tree surgery as a groundsman/tree climber.

In his spare time, Rob partakes in network scouts, hiking, camping, gaming, badminton, indoor climbing, playing the guitar and drums. Key achievements include obtaining the Chief Scout Platinum Award and Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

Elizabeth Anderson Graduate Arboricultural Consultant

Elizabeth joins the arboriculture team with over 4 years' experience in consultancy and tree surgery.

Elizabeth was the proud winner of the Institute of Chartered Foresters Student Award 2019 whilst studying for a BSc (Hons) Arboriculture and Urban Forestry at Myerscough College which she received a first class degree.

A keen climber, Elizabeth took part in both the 3ATC Northern and Southern Climbing competitions and the novice category climbing competition at the ARB Show in 2015.

Katie Bird Senior Ecologist

Katie has four years’ experience in ecology consultancy, working on residential, commercial, mineral extraction and road infrastructure projects across the UK. Within her role, she particularly enjoys producing PEAs, EcIAs and CEMPS. Specialising in mammals, her favourite species are bats and she is currently working towards her level 2 Bat Class Survey Licence.

Katie has three rescue cats, Bob, Barbara and Brenda, and Bob has wobbly cat syndrome.

Celise Taylor Ecologist

Celise has worked in large consultancies on a range of projects from footpath alterations to flood alleviation schemes. She has real interest in reptiles and amphibians.

A bit of an old soul, Celise loves crafting, baking and gardening, and is in the process of planning to build a pond in her garden for the local wildlife. Her two loves include her rescue terrapins, Pinky and Brain as well as attending heavy metal gigs.

Mark Blacker Ecologist

Mark has 5 years' experience in ecology consultancy, working on a wide range of projects including infrastructure and flood management schemes. A generalist overall, he has a preference towards newts, badgers and botany.

In his spare time Mark enjoys rowing, cycling and walking in the Peak District.

Maisie McKenzie Ecologist

Maisie is well practiced in field ecology and laboratory work, underpinned by her MSc Wildlife Conservation and Ecology. Her thesis centred around eDNA was published in the Journal of Applied Ecology.

Well travelled, Maisie has undertaken volunteer researcher placements in Costa Rica where she led a group in designing and completing a comprehensive bird and bat biodiversity study and in Brazil having undertook biodiversity surveys including freshwater vertebrate and invertebrate; birds, large mammals, vegetation and fungi.

Jake Matthews Assistant Ecologist

Jake recently completed a MSc Ecology and Environmental Management whilst working as a seasonal ecologist with Urban Green.

Previously he has worked in zoos across the UK and UAE; a highlight of which saw him sent to Sumatra twice with the UAE zoo to deliver conservation drone training to local rangers. He has completed electric fishing surveys for river habitat surveys and restoration for a rivers trust.

Jake is an active member of his local bat group and a keen bird watcher. As a volunteer of the British Trust for Ornithology and wildlife trusts, he has ringed birds, completed water voles surveys, and worked on willow tit citizen science projects. If that isn't enough, he is a Netflix addict!

Jake Healy Assistant Ecologist

Jake is currently studying towards a MSc Ecology and Environmental Management at Liverpool Hope University, having graduated with a BSc (Hons) Zoology at Liverpool John Moores University. He joins Urban Green having completed a successful survey season last year.

Jake is an avid supporter of Blackburn Rovers Football Club, and enjoys visiting the cinema, hiking and travelling.

Matthew Cooper GIS CAD Technician

Matthew has a masters in environmental science and is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS). He has previously worked as a GIS consultant within airspace industry, working on developments of national significance including Crossrail, HS2 and the proposed Heathrow expansion.

A keen spelunker and cyclist, Matthew has cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End. He's also twin and has an unhealthy plant obsession.

Gemma King Business Development Manager

Gemma has over 15 years' experience of working in business development within the consultancy and construction sectors.

She is responsible for managing the business development function in line with the business plan, with particular emphasis on CRM, tenders, framework management and marketing and communications.

Demi is so much more than our office manager – she can turn her hand to everything and anything. Bright, bubbly, brilliant (and occasionally bossy), we’d be lost without her.

She’s also a secret beauty blogger, social media guru, make-up artist and photographer – responsible in fact for all the photos you see here.
