Bat survey season is right around the corner!
If you have a site where bats might be a constraint, it’s time to get those additional surveys booked in.
Our team are on hand to deliver Preliminary Roost Assessments (PRA) and where evidence of bats is identified or suitable Potential Roosting Features (PRFs) are identified (such as slipped roof tiles, damaged facia boards, or crevices in brickwork), bat emergence surveys may be required to confirm likely absence or characterise a roost, in line with Bat Survey Guidelines (Collins, 2023).
Survey season: May – September
Optimal period: May – August
Where multiple surveys are required they must be spaced at least three weeks apart
Leaving surveys too late can easily result in project delays, so early planning is key.

Survey reports and mitigation plans are required for development projects that could affect protected species, as part of obtaining planning permission. They need to show whether protected species are present in the area or nearby, and how they use the site along with mitigation plans of how this will be avoided, reduced or managed any negative effects to the protected species. A licence will be required from Natural England if damaging their habitats can’t be avoided.
