New 18-hole Golf Course in West Lancs

Detailed planning approval has been granted by West Lancashire Borough Council for a new 18-hole golf course near Southport as part of the sites exciting redevelopment plans.

Plans will see land around the current 9-hole golf course and driving range expanded to include an 18-hole golf course, a new golf driving range, clubhouse and parking.

Urban Green and MAZE Planning Solutions have worked on behalf of the client; Leisure Lakes Ltd for a number of years developing the masterplan for the 300-acre site.

The vision is the creation of a year-round holiday and leisure destination unrivalled in Lancashire, with comprehensive proposals comprising of:

  • Contemporary holiday accommodation designed to integrate sensitively within the established landscape to provide a unique destination
  • Expanded golf course and player facilities
  • Nature conservation and woodland management initiatives with opportunities for interaction
  • A focus on owner occupation of holiday accommodation and creation of high quality supporting facilities for residents and day visitors.

Detailed planning permission was secured in June 2014 for 49 holiday homes following a successful appeal after reconsideration by a Government Planning Inspector.

The site lies within Green Belt, with much of it is within a Biological Heritage Site covered by a Woodland Tree Preservation Order. This raised a challenging set of land use planning issues.

The decision drew a 6.5 year reserved matters planning application process to a close after negotiations between Leisure Lakes, West Lancashire Borough Council and Lancashire County Council faltered.
