The staff at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, Urban Green’s charity of the year, felt their existing garden space had various issues to resolve. Working closely with the staff, the landscape team offered a design proposal to improve and extend the garden, creating a landscape that was fit for purpose and offered vital privacy to the building to support patients, families and staff.
The landscape proposals redesigned the central garden space with sensory planting and a new patio space for events and social gatherings where it is most appropriate in the site. Timber structures and carefully chosen planting provide privacy to the bedrooms and their patios, creating a calming, attractive setting where it is most needed.
A new productive growing and workshop area was proposed with an improved connection to the central space, featuring an outdoor garden room for flexible uses. A dementia friendly route was proposed within the existing garden and beyond, connecting to a naturalistic landscape that promotes wellbeing.
Looking to the future, our team have also produced a site-wide masterplan, incorporating new plans for the car park and site entrance. This forms a phased approach for the hospice to bring to life as more funding becomes available.
