Located on the banks of the River Mersey, Mariner’s Park is a retirement village providing much needed homes, care, and community for retired mariners and seafarers. To meet growing demand, proposals were developed to expand the village with a new apartment and office building. Positioned to overlook the Mersey Estuary, the new development offers striking views of Liverpool’s iconic docks and skyline. Two outdated administrative buildings were removed to make space for the new development, allowing for a modern building and landscape scheme to be integrated within the existing parkland setting.
Urban Green led the external landscape design proposals, which focused on improving access, encouraging social interaction, and enhancing biodiversity. Key features include new communal social spaces for apartment residents, private patios for ground-floor apartments, and improved footpaths to enhance connectivity across the site.
Planting was carefully chosen to suit the site’s exposed coastal environment, while also providing seasonal interest, sensory experiences, and habitat value for local wildlife.
The materials palette draws from both the modern architectural style of the new building and the textures and tones of the surrounding coastal landscape. This ensures a strong sense of place and continuity across the site.
The redevelopment delivers modern, resilient outdoor spaces that reflect the site’s maritime heritage while meeting the needs of a contemporary retirement community. It enhances communal facilities, improves site accessibility, and brings lasting ecological and sensory benefits to residents.
