Russell Road is a new extra care home scheme designed to provide specialist accommodation and support for members of the LGBTQ+ community. The development offers a mix of assisted living and extra care units, prioritising accessibility, inclusivity and comfort.
The landscaping was designed to allow access for all in mind, where possible levels have been kept to low gradients and steps removed. Planting to provide a front of house area to the buildings, an internal courtyard space with soft planting which divides the space, and assisted living units have a small private garden space with outdoor facilities for users.
The planting was carefully chosen to meet the end users needs, whilst also meeting Biodiversity Net Gain requirements. We were also able to work closely with our in-house ecological team and arboriculture team to provide a scheme which works for both the client and planning requirements.
The natural setting and retained trees promotes social interaction, physical activity, and mindfulness, contributing to mental wellbeing. Trees also improve air quality and create a healthier environment. Access to green spaces offers a calming alternative to hard urban landscapes. Where possible, high-quality existing trees were retained to enhance these benefits, especially for those in healthcare settings.
Biodiversity Net Gain assessments recorded a 10.31% net gain in area habitats and 29.71% in hedgerow habitats, achieved through a diverse mosaic of new grasslands, scrub, trees, and ornamental planting. The result is an uplifting, nature-rich environment that supports both residents and biodiversity.
