Restoration of a historic Victorian mill alongside a new urban village

Located in the sought after Houldsworth conservation area of Reddish, the restored Elisabeth Mill is home to 152 contemporary apartments,  flanked with 49 new townhouses,  semi-private courtyards, amenity spaces and external rooftop terraces.

The mill was in a poor state of decline and proposals sought to restore it to its former glory.

Urban Green worked alongside Ollier Smurthwaite Architects and Paul Butler Associates to develop and obtain detailed planning consent for the 3.7 acre development to create design proposals that achieved both the Local Planning Authority’s housing targets and the living aspirations of the community.

The design created distinct semi-public courtyards and shared communal gardens. Through use of appropriate materials, the streetscape achieves a hierarchy of uses and promoted shared surface ethos, allowing for private parking and the encouragement of active frontages whilst remaining sensitive of the site’s industrial heritage.

Detailed planning consent was was secured in early 2017.

“Urban Green's performance was very good. They were efficient in response times, producing an attractive and inventive landcape plan within budget.”
