Today sees the launch of a new interactive Tree Trail commissioned by the University of Manchester to encourage people to get outdoors and discover more about the trees around them.
The project is led by the University’s Environmental Sustainability team and has been designed to inspire people to to learn something new about the trees that they see every day. Despite being a growing urban campus, the University of Manchester cherishes its green spaces and trees. Staff, students and the local community have access to over 1,500 trees, spread from the North campus, the main campus on Oxford Road and in Whitworth Park towards the south of the city.
Urban Green has created the trail as a web-based app which can be used by anyone with a smartphone or handheld device. With 50 trees to discover, there is a suggested route for each of the three areas, designed to take up to an hour each.

The trail features beautiful photography and users are also encouraged to take their own tree photos and share these via Instagram. There is a dedicated account (@uomsust) and each tree is labelled with its own hashtag to make identification easier.
Julia Durkan, Sustainable Campus Officer, University of Manchester said:
““Trees are vitally important for nature, the environment and our health and wellbeing but are often overlooked. We wanted a Tree Trail that would engage and connect with staff, students and the local community and believe the innovative use of smartphones and social media will help us appeal to a much wider audience.””
